Mesilla Marshal Department

Welcome to the Mesilla Marshals Department’s web page. In a very real sense, this is a community web page as well, because it demonstrates the partnership we have with our citizens that gives the Marshals its strength as well as its motivation. The Mesilla Marshals Department exists to protect and to serve the Mesilla community, and that partnership accounts for the success of our Department.

We want it to serve at least three purposes:

To provide a responsive Marshals Department to the Town of Mesilla and its residents to enhance our quality of life through public health and safety.

To provide an additional avenue of interaction with the community.

To serve as a recruiter for the Marshals Department in our quest to locate, hire and retain the highest quality employees

Thanks for joining us here and welcome to the Mesilla Marshals Department.

Community Patrol
______________________________________________

The Mesilla Marshals Department is responsible for answering calls for service within the Historical Town of Mesilla limits. Deputy Marshals of the department are the first to responder to all calls for services. Deputy Marshals are responsible for traffic enforcement, accident investigation, minor criminal investigations, business and residential security checks, assisting citizens and motorist and enforcing all municipal and state laws. The town houses a high school, middle school and an elementary school.

The department answers on average 8,000 calls for service each year, issues an average of 1,000 summons, makes 300 arrests, and works several hundred traffic accidents just to name a few of their duties in the community.

The Marshals Department consists of seven Deputy Marshals and one sergeant. Bike patrol deputy marshals also perform normal vehicle patrol duties.

Each Deputy Marshal must go through and extensive hiring process that includes, a physical, physical agility test and an interview panel. After being hired with the department, they must successfully complete the 22-week basic law enforcement class at the Santa Fe Police Academy in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Deputy Marshals also must receive 40-hours of in-service training every two years to retain their New Mexico law enforcement certification. Deputy Marshals who have special certifications (i.e. Intoxilizer, Instructors, Firearms, etc. ) must maintain these certifications with regularly scheduled recertification classes

Deputy Marshals also must complete in-house departmental training that is offered throughout the year. These classes include, firearms training, vehicle stops, handling domestic violence calls, building searches along with a host of many other topics.

All Deputy Marshals are trained to use traffic RADAR along with many others specialties such as traffic investigations. Deputy Marshals are required to attend specialty schools as needed and to continue their college educations.

Normal patrol and traffic enforcement is perhaps on of the departments most visible tools. Its purpose is to provide safety of our citizens and to the thousands of Tourist visitors to our community. Through consistent enforcement of traffic laws, thorough accident investigations, identification and elimination of traffic hazards and strict DUI enforcement, the department strives to keep our Historical Town streets safe.

Mesilla Deputy Marshals strive to reach out to our community by means of personal contact with our vehicles, foot patrol, motorcycle patrol and mountain bike patrols. Deputy Marshals also are involved in crime prevention through Community policing. The Marshals feel that community involvement is a key component to the successful accomplishment of our mission.

Business & Residential Checks
______________________________________________

The safety and security of our businesses and residents within the Historical Town of Mesilla is of paramount importance to Deputy Marshals.  Deputy Marshals routinely check local business to insure that doors are secure and that they are free from vandalism or break-ins. The Deputy Marshals use vehicles, bicycles and foot patrol to check business areas throughout the Historical Town of Mesilla District.

Deputy Marshals also have established alarm procedures to follow when local business alarms are activated. Deputy Marshals must always respond to the scene of an alarm to insure that all is well. Most alarms end up being false activations of the alarm systems, but officers are required to respond to each and every alarm activations.

Business checks are part of the normal day to day operations of the Mesilla Marshals Department and do not have to be requested. Business owners need only to request business checks when unusual circumstances are present and extra patrol are required.

Residential checks are conducted during the nighttime hours for those persons out of town on vacation or experiencing other problems at their residence. Those persons requesting vacation house checks can do so by calling the department at 505 526-4138.

Persons having other incidents occurring at their residence such as vandalisms or prowlers should contact the department by telephone to submit an incident report.
